Kehillat Israel: Synagogue Millwork Installation

Precision Cabinets & Millwork installed the architectural millwork at Kehillat Israel's renewed synagogue sanctuary in Pacific Palisades: the wood entry Portal and its pivot doors, custom door assemblies, wall and stair paneling, storage niches and the surround for the new ark.

We are an installation-only contractor. General contractors and millwork manufacturers bring us in to install millwork fabricated by others.

Project background

A synagogue sanctuary renewal in Pacific Palisades

Kehillat Israel, founded in 1950, has been in its Sunset Boulevard building since 1997 (Kehillat Israel). Smoke and ash from the January 2025 Palisades Fire closed the building for 16 months. The redesigned 4,700-square-foot sanctuary, which holds more than 400 congregants, was rededicated on May 15, 2026 (Palisadian-Post).

The redesign added a new entry, the Portal, and a new ark (Jewish Journal). Precision installed the millwork that leads from the lobby through the Portal into the sanctuary, and the doors and paneling in the lobby, chapel and social hall.

Scope of installation

Synagogue millwork we installed

  • The Portal: the deep wood entry frame, jambs and ceiling, with lit reveals, leading into the sanctuary.
  • Sanctuary pivot doors: a pair of large wood pivot doors with patterned panel inserts.
  • Custom door assemblies: wood doors between the lobby and the social hall, and at the chapel, with inserts carrying the same motif.
  • Wall and stair paneling: vertical wood paneling along the lobby and the sanctuary stair.
  • Storage and display niches: built-in wood niches set into the paneled walls.
  • Ark surround: the light wood surround framing the sanctuary's new ark.

The centerpiece

Installing the Portal and its pivot doors

The Portal is the first thing a congregant passes through: a walk-through wood volume rather than a doorway. Its frame, jambs and ceiling meet the pivot doors, the lit reveals and the patterned ceiling panels, and every one of those joints is seen up close.

The pivot doors hang inside that frame, and their patterned inserts line up with the same motif on the door assemblies across the lobby.

Common questions

Synagogue and church millwork installation

Did Precision manufacture the millwork for this project?

No. Our role was installation: field layout, fitting, hanging doors and hardware, and trim, for millwork fabricated by others.

Do you work as an install-only partner for millwork manufacturers?

Yes. We install millwork that other shops design and build, for manufacturers and for general contractors.

Do you install millwork in synagogues, churches and other houses of worship?

Yes. Besides Kehillat Israel, our religious projects include Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Westminster.

Bidding a synagogue, church or high-finish interior?

Send plans or shop drawings (a link is fine), the project location, your bid date and schedule, and who is supplying the millwork, and we'll price the installation.
